LIGHT RAIL / VEHICLE AND TRACK MATCH

Can your tram run on railway tracks?

Pre-release | Checked September 28, 2026. Announced TF3 rules; release build not playtested.

Use a light-rail-capable tram and a connected route

Some TF3 trams are designed to transition from tram infrastructure onto railway tracks as Tram-Trains. Choose a light-rail-capable vehicle; this is not a feature of every tram. On roads it follows street rules, while on railway tracks it uses railway signals and reservations.

What to do

  1. Check the selected vehicle’s capability. Use the vehicle information to establish whether it is light-rail capable. The developer says only some trams support this transition. A vehicle’s appearance or a familiar TF2 model name is not proof.
  2. Trace a continuous route through the transition. Connect the tram infrastructure to the railway corridor the service is intended to use, and check the resulting line path. The announcement permits these connections but does not establish a universal junction blueprint or final connection-button sequence.
  3. Check each stop against the intended service. Confirm the chosen route actually reaches its stops with this vehicle. Do not assume a connected rail segment makes every station usable. For freight, also check the vehicle’s cargo category using the cargo/vehicle guide.
  4. Diagnose a delay according to the segment. On a street, inspect the road path and intersection. On railway track, inspect signals and reservations with the railway blockage checklist. A road traffic light and a railway signal control different parts of the journey.
  5. Observe the same vehicle cross both types of infrastructure. Check that it follows the intended line across the transition and reaches its next stop. If the planned route uses the wrong corridor, inspect the physical connection and then line waypoints.

How to tell it worked

The selected light-rail-capable tram has a usable line and passes from tram infrastructure onto railway track, then completes its stop sequence. A line preview alone is not a demonstrated successful run; watch the actual vehicle when the build is available.

If you are still stuck

  • The tram cannot use the rail section: Verify the vehicle capability and the connecting route separately. Not every tram is designated for railway running.
  • You want a normal train on tram track: The developer’s January reply says none of the included trains can do this. A specifically light-rail-designated modded train is a separate possibility, not base-game compatibility for the entire train roster.
  • You need a cargo tram station setup: This compatibility check does not establish final station-building steps or which cargo modules fit. Use actual build information rather than a TF2 station recipe.
  • A compatible vehicle still waits at red: Compatibility does not remove shared-track conflicts. Inspect the intended rail path and reservations.
