Find the actual downloaded Mod Hub files

TF3 release documentation and player questions checked October 3, 2026. Source-based instructions, not our own playtest; paths and available controls depend on your platform and build.

On Windows, check the Public mod.io folder first

The documented Windows download folder is C:\Users\Public\mod.io\10640\mods. A subscription JSON under your personal AppData folder is not the downloaded mod content. Mod Hub downloads and manually installed userdata mods live in different places.

Find a subscribed mod

  1. In Mod Hub, confirm the TF3 listing is subscribed and its download has finished. Note its mod ID and dependencies; the visible title alone may not identify the correct folder.
  2. On Windows, open File Explorer and paste C:\Users\Public\mod.io\10640\mods into the address bar. The Public user folder is intentional: do not restrict the search to your own Windows username.
  3. Inspect the downloaded folders and their metadata to match the mod ID or listing. Do not treat a subscription JSON containing IDs as the actual asset or script files.
  4. If your setup uses a different drive or location, inspect the existing globalsettings.json in %localappdata%\mod.io and read RootLocalStoragePath for the configured content location. A player in the linked case used settings to locate the download and confirmed it was under Public. The game-file manual lists typical paths, not a guarantee for customized installations.
  5. If you need a working copy, copy the identified folder elsewhere before editing. Keep the managed download intact so Mod Hub can update it. To install a local manual mod, follow that mod's instructions using userdata's mods folder instead.

Linux, macOS and manual mods

  • Linux managed downloads: ~/mod.io/common/10640/mods/.
  • macOS: the manual lists /Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/mod.io/common/ as the managed-content location. Inspect its actual contents; do not invent a deeper path. Finder normally hides Library.
  • Steam manual mods: use mods inside the active user's 3493540/local userdata directory. GOG/Epic userdata roots differ; use the linked file-location guide or the game's folder opener.

This is a desktop file-location guide. It does not establish a console-accessible download folder or make an incompatible mod work.

How to tell you found the right files

The folder contains the selected mod's real content and its identity matches the subscribed listing, rather than only a list of subscription IDs. For gameplay, also check that the intended save has that mod enabled; finding files does not activate it. A copied download folder is not guaranteed to be a complete, directly installable manual mod; retain the listing and dependency information.

If the folder is empty or missing

Recheck download completion, the TF3 listing and its dependencies, then the configured content location. A Steam installation directory or TF2 Workshop folder is not a substitute. Preserve the current save and downloaded content; do not delete the managed folder to test a guess. If a mod is found but does not load, continue with the installation checklist.
