Set up your first airplane route

Release documentation checked October 2, 2026. Source-based steps, not our own playtest; use the actual build and active mods for your save.

Match both airports to the airplane before buying it

The release station manual distinguishes Airfields for small planes from Airports for all planes and helicopters. Aircraft hangars are integrated into these facilities. Build compatible endpoints, give passengers or cargo usable access, create the line, then buy and assign an aircraft that can use both ends.

What to do

  1. Check the game year and the aircraft you intend to use. The manual lists Airfields from 1920 and Airports from 1950. An empty early-year aircraft menu is not proof of a broken installation.
  2. Place a compatible facility at each endpoint. Inspect land, road access and the correct passenger or cargo terminals. An airfield for small aircraft is not a substitute for a full airport when the chosen plane needs the latter.
  3. Connect the passengers or cargo to each terminal. Inspect the actual catchment and access. Use a feeder line when useful buildings are outside it; an isolated passenger airport has no guaranteed demand.
  4. Create the air line through both endpoints. Open the integrated hangar or use the line's Buy Vehicles control, then buy and assign a compatible plane. Trace one landing, boarding/loading and departure before adding another aircraft.
  5. Only expand after observing the queue and traffic. Airports can gain a second runway, additional terminals and hangars. More construction does not by itself fill empty aircraft or fix an incompatible terminal.

How to tell it worked

The assigned plane completes both airport stops and carries its intended passengers or cargo. Review line income against running costs and inspect any waiting queues before expanding capacity.

If you are still stuck

Plane cannot use a stop: check airfield versus airport compatibility and the selected terminal. No cargo loads: inspect the cargo category, customer and pickup settings. Console construction menu softlock before 1920: the developer lists saving and reloading as its workaround; do not treat an unavailable-era plane as purchasable.
